Course summary

Everything is political, and politics is everywhere. Our MA in Politics is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing you to explore politics across diverse themes without restricting yourself to a single specialism. Drawing on inspiring academic expertise, you will explore the latest perspectives in political analysis and theories, alongside research methodologies in political science. With a strong emphasis on classroom debate and diverse theoretical perspectives, the course equips you to analyse politics in its many forms. Through core units, you will engage with the latest perspectives in political theory, analysis, and research methodologies. You will then tailor your programme by selecting from a wide range of optional modules across different areas, including:

  • The Politics of Money and Finance;
  • Critical Globalisation Studies;
  • Gender in Comparative Politics;
  • Critical Environmental Politics;
  • Critical Military Studies;
  • Tools & Techniques of Applied Quantitative Analysis.
This breadth reflects the programme’s critical and interdisciplinary ethos. You will not only develop subject expertise but also build transferable skills in research design, critical inquiry, and communication, preparing you for careers in the public, private, and third sectors, or in PhD study. You will also be well-placed to continue developing and using your research expertise, either professionally or in PhD study as this course is eligible for the 1+3 studentship offered by the Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC) North West Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP), offering a unique, fully-funded route into postgraduate research. If your application is successful, you’ll be able to seamlessly transition from master's-level study to a PhD.
