Course summary

A Brighton Geography BA(Hons) degree prepares you for a variety of careers in areas such as environmental consultancy, urban planning, sustainability policy and conservation. Exploring Environments: An Introduction to Geographical and Environmental Fieldwork develops your field skills through practical investigations, while Fundamentals of Physical Geography explores the processes shaping our planet. You’ll address urgent global issues in Global Challenges: Climate Change and Environmental Degradation, and study Human Geography to understand social, cultural and economic dynamics worldwide. Statistical and Spatial Data Analysis builds your skills in data interpretation, and Academic Learning for Geography and Environmental Studies supports your transition to university level study. In your second year, you’ll focus on professional and research skills in Professional Practice for Global Challenges and Research Design and Advanced Data Analysis, while Geography and Environmental International Field Work takes you overseas to investigate environmental and social issues first-hand. Option modules let you specialise in areas such as pollution, sustainability, GIS and remote sensing and physical geography. You can also take an optional placement year for hands-on experience and to build confidence and a network of contacts. Our students have been on placements with companies such as the Department for Energy and Climate Change, Transport for London, the Field Studies Council, as well as with environmental firms and consultancies. Your final year is your opportunity to specialise. You’ll complete a Dissertation on a topic of your choice, supported by an academic supervisor. Option modules include a Community Placement in which you work directly with an organisation to apply your skills to real-world challenges before you graduate. *Option modules are indicative and may change, depending on timetabling and staff availability.

Additional fee information

The fees listed in the table above are for full-time UK undergraduate students in academic year 2025-26. You will pay further fees in each year of your course. Fees may increase each year. UK undergraduate and certain postgraduate fees are regulated by the UK government. The annual fee increase will not exceed the UK government's maximum regulated tuition fee limit set for the relevant academic year. Many of our courses include the option of a salaried placement year. Tuition fees for a placement year are charged at a lower rate of £1850. The international tuition fees listed above are for full-time courses during the academic year 2025-26. Further tuition fees are payable in each year of study. Non-regulated tuition fees, which usually apply to international students and UK postgraduate students* are subject to an annual increase of a maximum of 5% or the Consumer Prices Index (CPI), whichever is higher. *Some designated postgraduate courses are regulated by the UK government – the annual fee increase for eligible UK / Home students on these designated courses will not exceed the UK government’s regulated tuition fee limit set for the relevant academic year.
