Course summary
The BA (Hons) Degree in Professional Policing (DPP) is one of several routes into policing. It equips you with the pre-join qualification that will enable you to apply to become a police constable in England or Wales. Joining the police is a diverse and highly rewarding career. The job will give you the opportunity to make a difference to the public through investigation, prosecution and crime reduction, making people feel safer. The degree is professionally accredited and licensed by the College of Policing and meets all the requirements of their optimised national policing curriculum. It covers the police constable role and professional standards; valuing diversity and inclusion; response policing; policing the roads; managing information, intelligence and evidence; conducting investigations; preventing crime; public protection; working within the Criminal Justice System; community policing and effective liaison with partner agencies. The course will develop your transferable skills such as effective communication with victims, witnesses and suspects; leadership and team working, problem solving, making sound decisions; managing your own wellbeing and resilience. Our lecturers are a blend of academics and police practitioners with extensive operational experience. To immerse you in real policing we invite high profile guest speakers, undertake field trips to Northern Police Forces, prisons and the courts. We actively facilitate routes into specials recruitment, as well as organise simulation activities with partners across the university within our ‘crime scene house’ to add realism to situations. In your final year we invest time in mentoring you around CV writing, skills audit and preparing for police interviews. Employability is at the heart of our practice.

Assessment method
The assessment strategy is specifically designed to develop your confidence in public speaking and written communication in readiness for becoming a criminal justice practitioner. It includes essays, portfolios, reports, exams, reflections, presentations (including a VIVA). The course specification provides comprehensive detail. For your final year dissertation you will have the opportunity to focus on an area of policing you are interested in.

Entry requirements for advanced entry (i.e. into Year 2 and beyond)
For Second Year entry, applicants must have completed the first year of Higher Education in a similar subject with a total of 120 credits. For Third Year entry, applicants must have completed the first and second year of Higher Education in a similar subject with a total of 240 credits. Applicants will need to submit a transcript of their completed study, and offers will be subject to a mapping exercise of modules to ensure an appropriate alignment of course content. Please be aware that transfer applications are subject to availablity of space on the selected academic year of your chosen course.
