Course summary
In our MA and MFA Dance programmes, you’ll explore the diverse world of dance, focusing on non-Western forms like hip-hop, social, and urban dance. You’ll develop your artistic voice while gaining practical experience in choreography, curation, and production. These dance programmes blend practice with theory, preparing you for a wide range of careers in the dance industry. You will: Study a broad spectrum of dance forms, challenging traditional Western dance canons. Learn from UEL’s expert staff and benefit from nearly two decades of teaching in dance Develop essential skills in choreography, performance, curation, and dance entrepreneurship. Gain hands-on experience through industry placements with partners such as East London Dance and Breakin’ Convention. Graduate ready to pursue roles such as performer, choreographer, curator, or creative producer.
Modules
Year 1 Core Modules: Cultures of Performance, Dance Performance Practice, Research Methods in Creative Practice, Dance Curation and Production, Project Platform, Mental Wealth: Professional Life – Practitioners and Practice.
Assessment method
Assessment tasks are mainly spread across the year to make the workload manageable. Assessment methods include group work, exams and individual work including essays, presentations, case studies, professional development and practical activities depending on the nature of the course. All grades count towards your module mark. More details will be included in the student handbook and module guides. You'll always receive detailed feedback outlining your strengths and how you can improve. We aim to provide feedback on assessments within 15 working days, although you will receive immediate feedback following many of our face-to-face assessments. YEAR 1: Practical 60% Portfolio 40%
Entry requirements
Accepted Qualifications Postgraduate applicants should usually have a first or second-class bachelor degree or MA in a related subject. Applicants can still be considered if they have other qualifications and relevant professional experience, but they will have to supply two academic referees. Other accepted qualifications: 2:2 undergraduate degree in an arts-based subject.
