Course summary

The Christian Engagement with Islam pathway and the parallel Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate serves to resource missions and ministry, support continuing professional development and act as an excellent platform for further research. In addition, full-time and flexible part-time routes make study accessible for everyone – wherever you are in the world! Many of the units studied through this pathway have been developed by and are taught by specialists from The Manchester Centre for the Study of Christianity and Islam (MCSCI). The Centre is a project supported by Nazarene Theological College, aiming to create a centre of educational excellence in the area of Christianity and Islam. MCSCI seeks to work through teaching, learning, resourcing, equipping, and facilitating encounter and reflection in multiple ways. The MA in Theology (Christian Engagement with Islam) and its parallel Postgraduate Diploma course both have four course units. The Postgraduate Certificate course has two course units. These course units are structured around ten two-and-a-half hour seminars. The seminars are led by specialists in the appropriate disciplines. In-depth reading, group discussion and preparation of written assignments are all included within the course units. Nazarene Theological College is an approved partner of The University of Manchester, delivering programmes developed by Nazarene Theological College, approved by and leading to an award of the University of Manchester.

Modules

Core modules: Christian engagement with Islam; studies in Christian-Muslim apologetics. Elective units: Theology and culture; foundations of mission studies: Christianity in a pluralistic society; urban ministry and mission; independent study (Islam); contemporary missiology and culture: mapping the landscape; contemporary missiology and culture: emerging issues; Christian approaches to humanitarian or development practices.

Assessment method

Assessment methods include essays, presentations and seminar participation.


Entry requirements

Good Honours degree in a relevant subject (exceptional entry considered). International applicants will need a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, or its equivalent. Those who do not have the formal qualifications necessary to gain entry directly on to the MA courses are able to apply to the Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate. The Diploma is identical to the MA in all aspects except that the PGDip does not require the completion of a dissertation and it does not require the same standards of achievement. The Postgraduate Certificate requires completion of TWO taught units (60 credits) including required unit(s), does not require the completion of a dissertation and it does not require the same standards of achievement. Students who wish to progress on to complete the MA may do so, provided they have performed at the required level.

Additional fee information

As a private college, NTC receives no support from government sources. The College is supported by gifts and donations from Churches and from individual donors, and this allows student fees to be set at a competitive rate. The cost of studying at The Nazarene – and the options on how to pay – depend on the course you choose and whether you’re a UK/EU student or visiting us from further afield.
