Course summary

Learn the professional skills to make a real difference to people’s lives and support them through significant mental health challenges. We’ll equip you with the proficiencies and confidence to help patients cope with issues such as depression, psychosis, trauma and dementia. You’ll learn psychotherapeutic interventions and psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), counselling and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). You’ll practise your skills using our simulation facilities. These immersive spaces can be turned into a flat, ward, therapy room, GP practice or another real-world setting. This will prepare you for working with actual patients on placements. Students can also do an elective placement, with some choosing to go abroad for this or specialise in a particular field. Other opportunities include gaining micro-certificates in different therapies, which will improve your career prospects. You can also work on published research. As the course is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, you can apply to become a registered mental health nurse on graduation. You could work in acute, community and specialist services. On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: BSc (Hons) Nursing Practice (Mental Health)
