Course summary
This new, innovative and dynamic diploma course, running in conjunction with the School of Health Sciences at the University of Central Lancashire is accessible, flexible, progressive and professionally recordable and will fill a niche in Farriery education provision. It has been structured in such a way that will facilitate both the personal and professional development of qualified Farriers and positively assist those who are returning to academic work. The nature of the course, having both a theoretical and clinical perspective, necessitates access to practice of at least 12 weeks annually for the duration of the course. Students are also expected to attend for 2 study days per month from September to May. In addition, students on the course will be offered the opportunity to take the Train the Training Farrier Award (TTFA) course as a free additional qualification between years one and two of the programme which will enhance their coaching and mentoring skills and encourage them to become approved training farriers (ATFs).
Modules
Year 1 - Modern Approaches to Farriery; Professional, Academic and Research Skills; Farriery Protocols. Year 2 - Pathophysiology of the Equine Limb; Lameness Assessment and Diagnostic Imaging of the Equine Lower Limb; Farriery Clinical Case Studies.

The minimum qualification for entry will be a tariff agreement of advanced standing into level 5, i.e. students must be qualified registered farriers, listed on the WCF register having gained the Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers and have a minimum of one year of post-qualification experience, taken from the date of first registration. During studies the student is required to be employed in, or have agreed access to placement in a suitable farriery clinical environment for a minimum of 12 weeks annually. Students from outside the UK will be expected to provide evidence of working within the farriery industry as a practicing farrier for a minimum of 3 years full time and hold a recognised farriery qualification which would make them eligible for registration in the UK and an appropriate academic qualification. Students from outside the UK will also be required to fulfil the requirements for temporary registration by the Farriers Registration Council. Applicants who believe they may be eligible for Accreditation of Prior Experience/Learning (APE/L) for certain modules will be considered on an individual basis. Transferable/Key Skills and AS levels may be used to contribute to the entry requirement but they are not sufficient for entry on their own. Career experience of student skills may also be considered. The course will also facilitate the attainment of the Worshipful Company of Farriers Associate (AWCF) qualification. This is a distinct award, based on a high standard of traditional farriery skills and made by the WCF by way of separate examination. Please note: The Dip HE Farriery offered by Myerscough College, in conjunction with the University of Central Lancashire, and the AWCF are two distinct awards and must be enrolled upon independently. Additional costs for opportunities and items that are optional for the course include: books - approximately £120. Students will be provided with a reading list for each module studied. The decision to purchase any books remains with the student, and no books are considered essential.
