Course summary
BA (Hons) Specialist Make-up Design (Level 6) is a one-year programme providing a route to an honours degree for students that have completed a Foundation Degree, or equivalent Level 5 qualification, in Specialist Make-up Design or a closely related subject. The course will encourage the development of advanced level professional skills and will prepare you for working within the creative industries, as Specialist Make-up & Hair Artists and Designers. The term Specialist Make-up encompasses those elements of the industry using media make-up and hairstyling techniques, along with specialist make-up effects such as prosthetics. The course aims to encourage and enable you to identify and realise your own creative potential within self-identified personal, social, community and commercial contexts. Skills developed will be critical reflection and evaluation, effective communication skills within make-up design contexts, and those skills supporting theory and practice across a range of two and three-dimensional media, materials, processes and technologies. You will develop a critically aware and reflective attitude to your professional, studio and research practices in Specialist Make-up, participating in relevant theoretical and practice-led discourses through seminars and writing a dissertation or research project. Critical discussion will develop the implications of new and emerging technologies on roles within the many industry contexts and you will explore their place in relation to the wider creative industries. You will demonstrate your personal and professional skills, including creative, intellectual and practical transferable skills, and your knowledge and experience of industry practice, through your professional-standard portfolio. You will be able to develop an individual creative identity with the potential for a sustainable personal and professional practice in a professional environment (through employment or freelance) or by progression to further study elsewhere.
