Course summary

Healthcare technologies are the tools and innovations that power modern medicine. They bring together engineering, digital devices, sensors, software, and clinical expertise. By bringing these together we can improve how we detect, manage, and treat illness. Healthcare technologies can be anything from smart diagnostics and wearable monitoring systems to personalised treatments. These are reshaping healthcare and driving more efficient, patient-centred care. Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare goes far beyond image and signal analysis. AI combines data science, automation, robotics, and intelligent software systems. It can enhance how care is delivered. It powers clinical decision support, optimises hospital workflows, and enables personalised treatments. It also drives technologies such as wearable devices, smart sensors, and surgical robotics. When healthcare technologies are combined with AI, they become even more powerful. AI-enhanced devices can:

  • monitor patients in real time
  • personalise treatments
  • automate workflows
  • support clinical decision-making with unprecedented accuracy
On this course, you will learn how sensors, devices, digital health systems, and AI algorithms come together to solve real clinical problems. Instead of studying these areas in isolation, you will be trained to think across engineering, computing, and clinical practice. This mirrors how innovation happens in modern healthcare. You will build a number of practical skills. This will be done through hands-on project work, problem-based learning, and exposure to real healthcare challenges. You will learn to:
  • design and evaluate medical and digital health technologies
  • apply AI to complex healthcare data, images, and physiological signals
  • understand clinical needs. This will allow you to translate them into technological solutions
  • navigate regulatory, ethical, and safety frameworks in health innovation
  • work effectively with clinicians, engineers, data scientists, and industry partners
Graduates from this course will be equipped for roles across a number of areas. These include:
  • medical device companies
  • digital health organisations
  • AI innovation hubs
  • the NHS
  • global healthcare technology sectors
Whether your ambition is to develop smarter diagnostic tools, design patient-monitoring systems, or lead AI-driven healthcare projects, this MSc provides the interdisciplinary foundation needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving field. Throughout this MSc, you will learn through a blend of engineering, computing, and healthcare-focused teaching. The course will take you from essential foundations to advanced applied skills used in modern health innovation. In the first part of the course, you will build core knowledge in digital health systems, medical device technologies, AI fundamentals, and data interpretation. You will explore how sensors, wearables, electronic health records, and intelligent algorithms work in real healthcare environments. As you progress, the focus shifts towards applied learning. You will study clinical workflows, human-technology interaction, usability, safety, and regulatory considerations. Through problem-based activities, you will learn to evaluate existing technologies. This will allow you to develop solutions for real clinical needs.

Assessment method

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and end-of-semester exams.
