Course summary

The course provides a thorough grounding in the latest theory and analytical techniques used by finance professionals, allowing you to understand how money influences the world we live in. You’ll gain hands-on experience of the process of financial decision-making and practical knowledge of the workings and role of financial markets in the allocation of capital. The course also gives you an understanding of the qualitative and quantitative techniques needed to interpret market reactions to geopolitical events such as Coronavirus, Brexit, oil-price shocks and financial crises.

Modules

Semester 1: Financial reporting; corporate finance; quantitative methods in finance; economics for banking finance. Semester 2 (3 from the following): Research methods; financial statement analysis; derivatives; investments and portfolio management. Also 1 from the following: Mergers and acquisitions; international corporate finance; behavioural finance.

Assessment method

Successful completion of the taught modules leads to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. The Master’s degree is awarded on satisfactory completion of a dissertation, following the Diploma examinations. Dissertation topics range over all areas of relevance to finance and allow completion of a case study or research topic dissertation.


Entry requirements

A minimum of a 2nd Class Honours degree (2.1 preferred) or equivalent. Applicants without these formal qualifications but with significant appropriate/relevant work/life experience are encouraged to apply. If English is not the applicant's 1st language, evidence of proficiency must be provided, such as a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0 (5.5 in all bands). If the applicant does not meet the required score it may be possible to register for one of our pre-sessional English courses. To register applicants must hold a conditional offer for a course and have an IELTS score 0.5 or 1.0 below the required standard.
