Course summary

The BSc Business Management and Computing provides you with an full understanding of the fundamentals of business whilst allowing you to further explore the interactions of organisations, employees and other stakeholders via their digital engagement via the computing elements. In addition to exploring software, hardware and computing techniques an emphasis of this degree is to explore the human-computer interaction elements of business and computing with a focus on effective development and management. You’ll explore concepts and theories in organisational behaviour, strategy, operations and human resource management as well as understanding the development and successful implementation of technology to solve a wide range of business and societal problems. The interaction of business and computing is highly dynamic and this innovative environment and focus will broaden your contemporary knowledge of industry developments as they happen and expand your knowledge and competence in areas that might include artificial intelligence, computer game development, human-computer interaction and cyber security. The Business Management degree is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the benefit for you is that upon graduation you will be eligible for exemptions when undertaking future professional accreditation. Additionally, the computing element of this course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of IT (BCS) on behalf of the Engineering Council, which allows you to develop the skills needed to solve complex problems that include analysis, design, solution choice and implementation. Students on this course will have the opportunity to experience dedicated Linux, Mac OS X laboratories and central servers and to robotic equipment including Ardvinos, mobile robots and sailing robots. Given the applied nature of this degree, you will be taught by academic and industry practitioners ensuring the opportunity for you to be immersed alongside professionals and their affiliated networks. What will I learn? The holistic approach of business and management in your first year explores the foundational elements of the discipline leading to a good understanding of the fundamental principles of business that include the mechanisms by which management is discharged in various industry, and the impact that the business environment and macro-environmental elements (such as Brexit, COVID-19) have on management. Finally, the contemporary mechanisms of which organisations communicate value propositions to customers and markets are explored. Within Computing you will explore themes such as computer infrastructure, IT management and optimisation, web-based application development and programming. In your second and third year, you will undertake core business and management concepts that include organisational behaviour and theory, impacts of market structures and pricing strategies, and the effective development and utilisation of industry specific techniques for operation management. Within Computing, you will explore data structures and the formation and application of algorithms, the process of developing and distributing novel operational software, and exploring how you could answer the emerging challenges of business for optimal software integration with business processes.

A minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) English or Welsh is a requirement for entry to all our degree schemes. Business, Psychology, Mathematics, and Science degree schemes also require a minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in Mathematics and/or Science at GCSE (or equivalent).

Additional fee information

The UK and Welsh Governments have confirmed that EU students commencing their studies in the academic year 2021/22 will no longer be eligible for home fee status.
