Course summary

This English Language for Speech and Language Therapy degree has been developed specifically for those aiming for a future career in Speech and Language Therapy (SLT). While this degree does not lead to SLT certification upon graduation, the aim and goals of this undergraduate course is to help build a strong foundation for further postgraduate study and subsequent certification as a speech language therapist. You will become proficient in understanding how English works, why and how it is used, and where it has come from. You will also develop extensive knowledge of English linguistics and the areas of general linguistic theory that underpin study in this field. The depth of knowledge in language and linguistics you acquire on this BA (Hons) English Language for Speech and Language Therapy improves your understanding of how and why communication impairments can affect multiple aspects of language. Delving into the grammatical structure of the English language, you consider how words are built up (morphology), what distinguishes sentences from just strings of words (syntax), how context can alter meaning (semantics and pragmatics), and how language changes over time. Additionally, you will study subjects which offer a suitable foundation to pursue a career in speech therapy and to gaining SLT certification through further study. This includes training in phonetics and speech sciences, the functional anatomy of the human brain, aspects of cognitive and developmental psychology, and considerations of the methods, approaches, techniques, and issues relevant to speech and language therapy. ‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time.
