Do you want to top up your level 5 qualification to a full degree in Health and Social Care? A Top-up degree is the equivalent to the final year of an undergraduate degree. This programme aims to provide a natural progression for students who may have completed a related foundation degree or equivalent level 5 qualification (e.g. HND), or for qualified nurses wishing to gain graduate status. Top-up degrees enable students to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of a particular topic. The BSc Health & Social Care (Top up) provides students with the opportunity to graduate with an honour's degree. The top up degree course takes an integrated approach, combining policy and practice, and has a clear focus on employability. The course will expand upon your current understanding of how to support a wide variety of people, including the most vulnerable individuals and those with complex care needs. You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge fundamental to meeting the health and care needs of society, adapting to the latest changes in this dynamic sector, ensuring you graduate with the professional attributes to deliver to the current needs of the health and social care sector. The top up degree combines academic aptitude with practical competency, enabling you to gain a critical understanding of advanced theoretical knowledge and skills in leadership and management in the health and social care sector. It offers a range of professional and transferable skills, leading you to be able to progress and gain promotions within employment. On successful completion of this top up programme, students will have further opportunities in career progression; a wide range of careers are available across public, private and third sector environments such as the NHS, charities (Age UK, MIND) and social care organisations like Focus and Care Plus Group. Graduates from this course could take on leadership and management roles in health or social care and would be capable of working within a multi-agency environment. On successful completion students can also pursue further academic development via post-graduate routes. These include (but are not restricted to) social work, care management, nursing, midwifery, human resources, and teaching. To enable you to tailor your studies in line with your career aims, this top-up degree offers you a variety of optional modules to choose from advanced dementia care, counselling and communication skills, and the principles and practice of health promotion.

Assessment method
The assessment strategy is based upon a range of assessment tools, reflecting on both the diversity of knowledge and skills being assessed, and the need to provide students with a range of means to demonstrate academic achievement in relation to learning outcomes. A range of assessment methods is used on the course. The diversity of assessment methods is a key component of student learning and academic progression, and this includes the use of written assignments, reports, oral assessments, portfolio, set exercises and a dissertation. Trimester one, assessment for the Leading Change module - students are given the opportunity to develop their report writing skills particularly around the inclusion of criticality to carry forward into future assessments. The Statistics for Health module will also help students’ access contemporary statistics and health research to apply to other modules.

Qualification requirements
Applicants wishing to gain direct entry onto the top-up at level 6 will need to have 240 credits at level 5. For example, a relevant HND, DipHE, or Foundation degree qualification, such as Social Care, Health and Social Care, Childhood Studies, Counselling or Social Sciences. Additional entry requirements include DBS and interview.
