Research content There are three different pathways that can be taken to complete the Doctor of Medicine programme:
  • carrying out work during the 5 years of taking the course
  • publishing work previously completed
  • collating a series of papers previously published.

Assessment method

Assessment description Candidates are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject, which must then be written up as a substantial thesis. The final stage of the MD programme is the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a Board of Examiners.


Entry requirements

Graduates must hold a qualification which is recognised for registration by the General Medical Council of the UK. Professional requirements Students should have been engaged for at least two years in an appropriate clinical or research setting in one or more hospitals or institutions approved by the appropriate Board of Studies and have completed the majority of the work for the degree during that employment. English Language requirements You will normally need one of the following: - IELTS: 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in all components - The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 69 with no less than 62 in any element - TOEFL IBT: 100 overall with a minimum 24 in all 4 components You will need to get your English language qualification within 24 months prior to starting your course. If you need to improve your English language skills before starting your studies, you may be able to take a pre-sessional course to reach the required level.
