Course summary
This is a challenging and stimulating course that explores the power of the spoken and written word across cultures and throughout history. You will explore English language and literature through aspects such as gender, race, class, sexuality, culture and society. You will investigate historical and cultural variation in language and the importance of context in shaping discourse. Developing the theoretical tools that will enable you to analyse and interpret a wide range of texts, you will explore English as a literary language and track its development as a global language of communication. Studying influential texts, and considering relevant debates and theories, you will develop key analytical skills and a deep theoretical knowledge of genres and styles. In year 2 you can choose a placement module which will allow you to gain professional experience in industries such as publishing, broadcasting, social media marketing, PR and the charity sector.
