Course summary

This Optometry and Ophthalmology MSc (Advanced Clinical Practice) course has been developed by practicing clinicians and researchers for multidisciplinary ophthalmic clinicians such as optometrists, orthoptists, and ophthalmic nurses. This course is delivered through online learning with the opportunity to attend an optional, in-person practical skills day of your choice. This course has been accredited by NHS England where on successful completion, you will achieve a digital ACP blue badge recognising you as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in field. Modular (flexible) students - Some postgraduate taught and MRes programmes are available on a modular basis. Modular study lasts between 2 and 5 years. This is different to a part-time study which lasts for a fixed period.


Entry requirements

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner Pathway is open to only UK registered optometrists, orthoptists and ophthalmic nurses who are currently working in an ophthalmic setting. Applications must meet the following criteria: • Have an undergraduate degree BSc (Hons) at 2:1 or above in a dedicated ophthalmic-related course • Applicants without a first degree or BSc (Hons) at 2:1 in a dedicated ophthalmology-related course may be eligible to apply, if combined with appropriate practice-related experience relevant to the programme and post postgraduate certification in an ophthalmology-related subject. • They are currently examining patients and are making clinical decisions either under supervision or autonomously • Certified evidence of an appropriate level of competence in clinical examination of the eye, to include slit lamp examination of the anterior eye, slit lamp biomicroscopy assessment of the optic nerve head and retina (Fundoscopy) and tonometry. If you do not meet the above requirement you may be eligible to study for our academic MSc route in Optometry and Ophthalmology. English level: Level 2
