Course summary
This is a balanced course that develops your Chinese language skills and your historical knowledge. The list of history modules are designed to complement your Chinese studies. They cover various political, social and cultural themes. You will also spend part of your degree studying in China, immersing yourself in Chinese society. Through the study of history, gain the critical foundations for understanding how Chinese culture has changed and developed over time - while gaining advanced language skills. Choose from a variety of history modules that complement your Chinese studies, covering political, social and cultural themes, and engage with real research from the beginning of your course. Develop the skills of historical research, independent judgement, critiquing accepted opinions and constructing your own effective arguments. You’ll undertake intensive language teaching with the opportunity to put into practise your Chinese during a year at one of our partner universities in mainland China or Taiwan. Returning to Sheffield for your final year you’ll refine your language skills, deepen your understanding through research-led modules and complete a dissertation project of your choice supervised by world-leading researchers. Through this degree, you’ll not only explore China’s past, but also anticipate how past developments will drive events in the future. Why study this course?
- An immersive, hands on experience - become a specialist in your chosen areas of history and develop your understanding of Chinese culture.
- Gain lived experience with a year abroad - apply your rapidly developing language skills in the real world, refine your critical understanding – and experience a life-changing trip.
- History Research-led Special Subject - in small-group seminars, explore the details of your favourite area of history with a true expert on the topic, and become a specialist in your chosen area.
- Quality teaching time in smaller seminars - core to our teaching ethos, every history module includes a seminar with 12-16 people.
