Course summary

Develop your Contemporary Fine Art creative practice within a forward-thinking and multidisciplinary course. The HND Art and Design (Art Practice, Fine Art) course is a two-year level 5 qualification equivalent to the first 2 years of a fine art degree. Specialize and refine your creative practice in a supportive and stimulating environment with an excellent level of personal tutor contact and a dedicated studio space. You will be challenged and supported to extend your technical skills and strengthen your body of work. You will take part in guided visits to exhibitions and galleries and will experience a broad range of workshop demonstrations that will introduce and build the skills you need to develop as a practicing artist. The HND will give you the confidence to progress your ideas, make your mark in the context of current practice and support you in building a body of work that can best represent your vision, strengths and talents as a professional and exhibiting artist. On successful completion of this course you will achieve a Higher National Diploma in Art Practice. The course is based in our Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries which is situated between the Kings Road and the Fulham Road in London SW10, in the heart of Chelsea. We are fortunate to be situated close to major galleries and Museums including the Saatchi Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Science and Natural History Museums in Exhibition Road, and the Serpentine Galleries in Hyde Park. These and other galleries are used for art and design research by our student, perfect for finding your inspiration before coming to use our Fine Art studios, with flexible work spaces, and fantastic natural light, where you will be able to create work that fits your ambitions in a supportive environment. In addition, our successful Art Cast podcast series has enabled our students to connect with a wide range of artists to discuss their current practice and what it is like to work in the industry. Recent guests include: Jeremy Dellar, David Shrigley, Peter Kennard among others. The series is led by the Programme Manager for Fine Art, so you will have direct access and input into the series, which not only helps develop your awareness of contemporary practice, but can also be an opportunity to build your professional working skills. On successful completion of this course you will achieve a Fine Art BA (Hons) Fine Art, validated by Ravensbourne University.

Assessment method

Assessment criteria is written on project briefs. Some units will be assessed together. Students are given written and verbal individual feedback on their assessments.

Entry requirements for advanced entry (i.e. into Year 2 and beyond)

Direct entry into Year 2 (external applicants): We are happy to consider applications for direct entry onto the second year of study from those who have already completed and been certificated on the associated HNC at level 4 with a merit profile. Applicants will be asked to supply their Pearson ID number available on their certificate or transcript.

Students undertaking higher level education need to have a commensurate level of understanding of the English language so as to be able to achieve their qualification. In the case of applicants for whom English is a second language, the interviewer and Central Admissions Team must assure themselves of the applicant’s ability to function at IELTS English Level 5.5 (or equivalent). This is in line with the requirements of the awarding and validating bodies. Where applicants do not hold an IELTS qualification at 5.5 or equivalent, the Central Admissions will ask the applicant to sit an online test (BKSB) to check the suitability of the applicant’s English level prior to interview. Photographic identification will be required. Applicants who have recently completed (i.e. in the last 2 years) a formal programme of study in English at an appropriate level (such as a level 3 BTEC or ‘A’ level) prior to starting their Higher National are considered to be at a suitable level of English without requiring additional evidence..

Students will be required to cover costs of exhibition admittance, specialist equipment and materials. Material costs will be dependent on your specific area of practice. Admittance costs will vary depending on the exhibition (for example they could be free, or cost £30).
