Course summary

Course overview Our Statistics MSc will provide you with the essential knowledge and skills relevant for a career as a professional statistician or researcher. As the data we generate increases, so does the global demand for analysts who can apply modern statistical methods, to make sense of it. In-depth understanding and skills in statistical techniques have a broad range of applications in the modern world. Thanks to the more widespread use of data and statistical analysis required to interpret it, career opportunities for statisticians are expected to grow in areas including: pharmaceuticals finance business analytics healthcare government policy social media and technology

Modules

You will complete an in-depth research project. This can be in any area you choose. You will be supported by our academic staff and research groups. You will study core modules to teach you the foundations of statistics. All students will have a range of optional modules to choose from. These cover topics in statistical modelling, statistical machine learning and developing your computing skills in using statistical software including R. You could develop your understanding about contemporary statistical machine learning methods and how they are used to tackle real-world challenges. This will allow you to study areas of statistics that you are personally interested in.

Assessment method

Students will typically be assessed by either an examination or coursework, or a combination of the two. Any examination would take place at the end of the teaching period for the module. Over the summer period towards the end of the course, students will undertake a dissertation of 15,000-25,000 words.


Entry requirements

A high 2.2 (or international equivalent) in mathematics or a closely related subject with substantial mathematical content. English language requirements: IELTS 6.0 (no less than 5.5 in any element).
