Course summary
About the course BEng (Hons) Architectural Engineering integrates engineering principles with architectural design to address the technical performance of buildings. You’ll study how structures, materials, environmental systems and construction methods come together to create safe, efficient and sustainable built environments. This course is designed for students who want to work at the intersection of engineering and architecture, supporting the design and delivery of complex building projects or progressing to further technical study. Why this course • Ranked in the top 15% universities in the world (Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024) • Top 8 universities in England for undergraduate student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2024) • Top 3 modern university in London (Complete University Guide 2025) What you’ll study You’ll build a solid foundation in architectural engineering, while gaining professional skills valued across architecture, engineering and construction sectors, including structural analysis, environmental building design, digital modelling, materials evaluation and professional communication. Modules offered can vary each year but may include: • Structural Engineering Principles • Building Physics and Environmental Design • Construction Materials and Methods • Architectural Engineering Design • Professional Practice and Sustainability How you’ll learn • Teaching through lectures, design studios, laboratories and technical workshops • Assessment through design projects, technical reports, coursework, presentations and examinations • Academic support through personal tutors, studio based learning and skills development sessions You’ll also benefit from digital learning resources that support independent study and assessment preparation. Future opportunities This course prepares you for careers focused on the engineering and technical design of buildings, supporting multidisciplinary collaboration within the built environment sector. You’ll develop skills that are applicable across a wide range of professional and technical roles. Example career areas include: • Architectural and building engineering roles • Structural and environmental design support • Construction and project coordination • Building performance and sustainability consultancy • Engineering and technical design services The transferable skills developed on this course also support progression into postgraduate study or professional engineering pathways. Facilities You’ll study in specialist environments designed to support technical design, analysis and experimentation. • Design studios for collaborative project work • Engineering laboratories for materials testing and environmental analysis • Computer labs with industry standard design and modelling software These facilities support your academic development and help you apply architectural engineering knowledge with confidence.
