Course summary

Advance the future of medicine with hands-on lab training in high-tech labs, a guaranteed internship option, and world-leading research expertise at Aston University. Stem cells and regenerative medicine sit at the forefront of modern healthcare, driving breakthroughs once thought impossible. From restoring damaged tissues to developing personalised treatments, this field is redefining how we treat disease, extend healthy lifespans, and improve quality of life. At Aston University, this MSc gives you the knowledge and practical expertise to shape the future of medicine. You will:

  • Master advanced laboratory techniques including cell culture, high-resolution microscopy, and genetic manipulation.
  • Collaborate with world-leading researchers in translational and clinical science.
  • Apply your learning to real-world challenges, from tissue engineering to personalised healthcare solutions.
  • Undertake a substantial research dissertation to deepen your expertise and advance your career.
This programme is designed for ambitious biosciences graduates, clinicians, and health professionals who want to make a tangible impact in regenerative medicine and biomedical innovation. How you will learn Our teaching approach is modern, interactive and hands-on, designed to bridge the gap between theory and real-world practice. From the very start of the programme, you’ll be encouraged to apply your knowledge in practical contexts, ensuring that your learning is directly connected to the skills employers and research institutions are looking for. You will experience a rich variety of teaching methods, including lectures, laboratory practicals, tutorials, seminars, group projects and independent research. A key highlight of the course is the research project, often laboratory-based, where you will design experiments, collect and analyse your own data, and gain the confidence to work as an independent scientist. What you will learn During this MSc you will gain an in-depth understanding of stem cell biology and the rapidly evolving field of regenerative medicine. You’ll explore how these disciplines are driving the development of new therapies and discover the scientific, ethical and clinical considerations that shape the future of healthcare. Your studies will combine advanced theory with practical experience, giving you the confidence to apply techniques such as tissue culture, genetic editing and flow cytometry to real research questions. Alongside technical expertise, you’ll strengthen your ability to think critically, interpret complex data, and design and manage independent projects. By the end of the programme you will not only have mastered essential laboratory and research skills, but also developed the professional and transferable skills needed to succeed in research, healthcare, biotechnology and beyond.

Modules

Essential Laboratory Skills and Competency Assessment: Prior to undertaking an experimental work students should know how to select an appropriate test method and equipment and understand the importance of following standard operating procedures and good laboratory practice. In this practical based module students will develop a high level of competence in basic laboratory and advanced lab skills, data analysis and interpretation. | The laboratory is a potentially hazardous working environment. However, with the proper procedures in place, work can be carried out safely. Laboratory competencies are identified and assessible behaviours reflective of requisite professional knowledge, performance skills, applications and attitudes. This module is to ensure that students are competent in the laboratory. | Professional Development and Research Communication Skills: This module introduces students to the various lines of employment open to them on completion of the course. It will explore effective CV production, application and interview strategies and will employ the expertise of the Aston University Careers Service team to equip students with job seeking strategies and realistic career plans that complement the practical and academic skills achieved during the rest of their course. | Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology: The fundamentals of cell and molecular biology which will be seen as an introductory module to bring all students to a good level of understanding of cellular structure and functions. | Applied Biotechnology: Proteins and Products: This module will provide students with key knowledge and understanding of biotechnology processes, in particular focusing on the expression (and purification) of recombinant proteins and protein therapeutics, using various industrial important expression systems (bacterial, yeast, insect and animal cell systems). | Stem Cell Biology and Cellular Differentiation | Tissue Regeneration | Ageing and Regenerative Medicine | Research Project

Assessment method

Our Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine MSc curriculum utilises a range of different assessment types and the assessment strategy reflects both the national educational requirements in the FHEQ and the professional educational standards and learning outcomes from the GPhC. Assessment will be through a combination of written and oral examinations, class tests, individual and group coursework, projects, presentations, and practical assessments.
