Course summary

Research interests include: British and American colonial history in 18th century, 19th and 20th-century British social, economic and political history; later prehistorical Roman and post-Roman Britain; early Medieval Britain; social and political history of England and Wales from 11th to 15th centuries; urban and local history of medieval and early modern periods; social and economic history of early modern England; history of Germany from 1500 onwards; science in 17th-century England; British colonial America; British politics in 18th century; British political history in 19th and 20th centuries; popular culture in Wales since 1850; American social and political history 1850-1970; West Africa in the 19th century; modern French history.

Assessment method

The Ph.D normally takes three years of full-time research (five years part-time), after which students complete and submit a dissertation of 80-100,000 words.


Entry requirements

The admissions requirements for the MPhil and PhD programmes are as follows: The minimum basic entry requirement for a MPhil or PhD is normally an Honours Degree (Class 2 Division 1) or equivalent. Non-native English speakers are required to take a University recognised test of academic English language proficiency with required minimum proficiency levels equating to an IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 580 (paper based test) or 237 (computer based) with an essay rating of 5.0. Applicants who have successfully undertaken a Bachelors degree in a UK University are exempt from this requirement.

Pearson PTE: 62 with minimum scores of 51 in each component
