Course summary

The MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is a conversion master's, designed for students who have a first degree in a subject other than Computer Science (or a subject closely related to Computer Science), who wish to develop their knowledge and skills to start a career in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Industry. The course has been developed in close collaboration with a number of commercial partners including IBM to meet the skills gaps in this growing employment area. The course provides an introduction to the knowledge and skills required you will need to work within the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. You have the choice of a one or two year option, with year two as a Year in Industry. The first year comprises of taught modules and the second year includes an industrial project as part of a paid work placement. Taught modules include introductions to the maths and programming required to work within this growth industry. Year in Industry Work experience is a valuable component to help gain skilled employment. To meet the increasing demand for MSc students to have industry experience, an optional, paid year in industry is has been built into this programme. The placement is typically 30 weeks from September to June. During the placement year you will spend time working in a relevant company suitable for the MSc. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience which will boost your CV, build networks and develop confidence in a working environment. Although industry placements are not guaranteed, the University offers you opportunities and support throughout the process to ensure that the chance to find a placement is high. We have a dedicated team to help you prepare and find a suitable placement and our superb links with industry means several companies work with the department to offer our MSc students competitive placements. The University’s Careers and Employability Service will also assist you with producing a professional CV, preparing for placement interviews and finding a placement.


Entry requirements

The MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is for those who are are seeking alternative career opportunities, within the context of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence industry. The course is suitable for those who have done a first degree in a subject not related to Computer Science. You will need a high 2:1 Bachelors Degree with Honours (or above), and be expected to have the majority of module marks in this range, in a subject other than Computer Science (or subject closely related to Computer Science). This includes students with first degrees from near-STEM, far- STEM and even non-STEM subjects. Students from under-represented-groups within the computer science industry are particularly welcome. International qualifications: International Qualifications Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines.
