Course summary

This programme focuses on giving you the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve well regarded positions within the maritime and offshore safety and security industries. You will also gain confidence in the interpersonal and international cultural skills essential for a senior role in the maritime safety and security sector. You will gain an understanding of the underlying principles upon which the industry is based and the ways it is developing to address the future as well as the threats that confront its day to day operations. You will also gain confidence in dealing with people from across the globe which is essential for a senior management position within the maritime sector. This course is designed to give you a balanced education in the various aspects of the safety and security marine industry. This will enable you to follow your career aspirations while at the same time opening up new horizons for the future. If you want to learn about the safety and security aspects of the maritime and offshore industries, then this course is perfect. This MSc is designed for existing professionals serving in the industry as well as those looking for a career within maritime, offshore and sea transport trade. You may already have a responsible sea-going or middle management position and be qualified to that level but want to achieve the next level in your career. If you are new to the industry it’s likely you’ll have a degree in a related technical or management subject.

Modules

The MSc Maritime Safety and Security Management course comprises eight compulsory modules. Completion of all the modules and dissertation will lead to the award of master's degree. Full-time students attend eight taught Modules over two Terms, and then complete their Dissertation relating to maritime safety and/or security over three months in the summer, within the 12-month period of the degree. The course on a part-time basis normally takes just over two years (but can extend up to five years). In two years, students are expected to complete eight taught Modules, plus a Dissertation on a maritime safety and/or security topic. Core Modules

The dissertation is an opportunity to explore in-depth a maritime safety and/or security topic that has current and future relevance and traction for career development. The aim of this module is to develop skill and gain experience in managing a small-scale systematic investigation to showcase capabilities to future employers.

Assessment method

Each subject you study will have coursework comprising essays where you’ll be expected to give examples of critical analysis. You will take exams twice a year and to gain a pass you must achieve 50% in each of the coursework and exam elements. Formal assessment of the taught part of the programme is based on examination and coursework. The coursework which generally takes the form of problem or essay type questions. The examinations are invigilated written closed book examinations. Coursework undertaken in the earliest part of the programme will give students the opportunity to establish the academic level expected. Coursework is designed as learning activities by simulating real world challenges with opportunities to develop and demonstrate research and other skills in addition to knowledge and understanding of the various subject areas. A variety of activities make up the coursework component including, for example, group and individual presentations, essays, reports, research proposal and dissertation. This is to ensure a variety of approaches to assessing knowledge and skills. Coursework is important in demonstrating both the capacity for independent study and to apply and extend the materials covered in class.


Entry requirements

"For those already working in the industry, we require a first degree, recognised professional qualification or the equivalent Certificate of Competence as Master or Chief Engineer: Class 1 Master Mariner or Class 1 Engineer and experience in one of these roles. For those coming straight from an undergraduate course, we require a lower second-class honours degree (or higher) in a relevant subject from a recognised institution.
