Course summary

The BA (Hons) Fine Art top-up degree programme is designed for people who have successfully completed an HND or Foundation degree in a relevant subject and now wish to convert their existing qualification into a full BA honour's qualification in the heart of London. Close to important museums and galleries, this dynamic and thought provoking course is taught by a team of dedicated lecturers with a broad range of fine art and creative industry experience and expertise. The programme will help you develop your creative voice, within the context of your practice as an emerging professional artist. Supporting you through a broad range of hands-on experiences and critical investigation. The course provides excellent quality of higher education in Fine Art; particularly the high level of lecturer contact and personalized individual support. Our fine art studios are also a much sought-after resource, encouraging deep research and collaboration. We offer an intellectually stretching yet supportive environment which encourages the diverse and multidisciplinary approaches to fine art production. We also encourage and seek out people from the widest range of backgrounds and cultures to apply and be involved in the evolving discussion of what art can be in contemporary society. The course provides many opportunities that promote new forms of experimentation, collaboration and enjoyment. At the Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries, you will form part of a dynamic and well established community of like-minded people and artists working in varied fields and media. On successful completion of this course you will achieve a Fine Art BA (hons) accredited by Ravensbourne University. The course is based in our Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries which is situated between the Kings Road and the Fulham Road in London SW10, in the heart of Chelsea. We are fortunate to be situated close to major galleries and Museums including the Saatchi Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Science and Natural History Museums in Exhibition Road, and the Serpentine Galleries in Hyde Park. These and other galleries are used for art and design research by our student, perfect for finding your inspiration before coming to use our Fine Art studios, with flexible work spaces, and fantastic natural light, where you will be able to create work that fits your ambitions in a supportive environment. In addition, our successful Art Cast podcast series has enabled our students to connect with a wide range of artists to discuss their current practice and what it is like to work in the industry. Recent guests include: Jeremy Dellar, David Shrigley, Peter Kennard among others. The series is led by the Programme Manager for Fine Art, so you will have direct access and input into the series, which not only helps develop your awareness of contemporary practice, but can also be an opportunity to build your professional working skills. Assessment method

Learning and Teaching methods used include, but are not limited to: • Tutorials (Individual & Group) • Group Critiques • Seminars • Lectures • Practical Workshops • Study Visits The top-up programme has an emphasis on professionalization of practice, steered towards a final exhibition of work. Studio based activities are a significant feature of the programme, providing a location for both individual and group tutorials. Projects are open and allow for broad, multi-disciplinary approaches which allow students to create personal responses. Summative Assessment takes two forms, either written, or practical ‘portfolio’ based submissions. Written submissions will cover a range of contexts applicable to professional working, including academic writing, reviews and self-reflection. The practical submissions are not limited to specific types of work, to allow for the broadest practice ambitions, and again encourage the thought of presenting to a range of contexts. Prior to Summative Assessment, students receive weekly tutorials and will have 6 weekly ‘Progress Reviews’ which will offer direct formative feedback on both module and course progress. Formative assessment through tutorials and group sessions is intended to provide a supportive environment that encourages and directs the development of students’ practice. Group sessions support students to engage critically with one another’s work, whilst encouraging the awareness of how their own work presents to a broader audience.

Mature students: if you do not meet the entry requirements as outlined above, we may still consider your application based on previous employment or previous study. We appreciate that mature students may have extensive relevant experience gained through paid or unpaid work, or through other types of professional training or sector-related opportunities and this experience may be used to support an application. Students undertaking higher level education need to have a commensurate level of understanding of the English language so as to be able to achieve their qualification. In the case of applicants for whom English is a second language, the interviewer and Central Admissions Team must assure themselves of the applicant’s ability to function at IELTS English Level 5.5 (or equivalent). This is in line with the requirements of the awarding and validating bodies. Where applicants do not hold an IELTS qualification at 5.5 or equivalent, the Central Admissions will ask the applicant to sit an online test (BKSB) to check the suitability of the applicant’s English level prior to interview. Photographic identification will be required. Applicants who have recently completed (i.e. in the last 2 years) a formal programme of study in English at an appropriate level (such as a level 3 BTEC or ‘A’ level) prior to starting their Higher National are considered to be at a suitable level of English without requiring additional evidence..
