Course summary

Psychology is a core component of psychotherapy and counselling. The BSc (Hons) Psychology, Psychotherapy and Counselling degree offers you the chance to learn about the interaction between these disciplines, gaining an appreciation of the diversity of perspectives involved, along with and understanding of their therapeutic use. Our approachable and enthusiastic tutors will guide you as you develop knowledge of the theories, methods and debates central to the three core elements. You will be supported to explore psychology, gain specific counselling skills, and consider broader social issues that impact on the roles of psychotherapist and counsellor, such as assumptions, stereotyping, diversity and prejudice. You will develop knowledge and skills in the use of psychological research methods, and have an appreciation of the ethical issues involved. Inter-personal and transferable skills a are also vital, so you will be challenged to develop sought after communication, problem solving, numerical, analytical, self-management skills and more. Overall, our dedicated team are focused on helping you gain the skills employers’ value along with a detailed understanding of psychology, counselling and psychotherapy.

Assessment method

Psychology, Psychotherapy and Counselling tutors promote the transfer of learning between academic theory and work based learning. Teaching and learning methods are varied including individual study, lectures, group activities, speakers and on line learning. Guest lectures and presentations by a variety of visiting speakers from relevant employment areas will offer you the chance to further develop your knowledge and understanding. Assessment methods are varied and include exams, presentations, essays, practical reports and portfolios.
