On this course you’ll learn how to design and exploit automation and robotic systems in a range of manufacturing and industrial applications. You’ll cover a wide range of core engineering subjects – including industrial automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, and control systems – preparing you to apply them to any modern engineering industry. How you learn All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive. You’ll apply your knowledge and skills to real-world contexts – actively engaging in live projects, field trips, networking events and competitions. Key themes The course covers a wide range of important topics in automation, control and robotics. These range from control systems, advanced control methods and industrial robotics to mobile robots, industrial automation and artificial intelligence. These live projects enable you to enhance your professional skills and your creativity – as well as developing a holistic understanding of the engineering and management field. Networking opportunities During the course you’ll have numerous opportunities to engage with career management, career fairs and workshops, employer presentations, visits and professional advisers. Field trips You’ll make regular visits to Hallam’s research centres to develop your research skills and find research project opportunities. We also look for opportunities to organise industrial field trips. Competitions Our Department of Engineering and Mathematics runs a best-project competition among the MSc Automation Control and Robotics students. as an example FESTO price for a best student project.

Entry requirements

Home and EU students Normally one from • an honours degree (2.2 or above) in a science or engineering subject, • suitable professional qualifications in an engineering field • a degree in any discipline containing aspects relevant to automation and control engineering , plus at least one year of appropriate industrial experience • a diploma in a technological area, with at least three years of relevant experience You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. An IELTS score of 6.0 with 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English. If your English language skill is currently below an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English level.

Additional fee information

Our tuition fee for UK students on full-time undergraduate degree courses in 2025/26 is £9,535 per year. These fees are regulated by the UK government and therefore subject to change in future years. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200. If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees.
