Course summary

The BA (Hons) Primary Teaching with Early Years at the University of Chichester is designed to train you to become a fully qualified primary school teacher, focusing on children aged 3-7 (Reception and Key Stages 1 in primary schools). This three-year program emphasises both theoretical and practical aspects of teaching, providing students with the opportunity to teach the full range of subjects within the national curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage. The University of Chichester is an ideal place to train as a teacher, perfectly aligning with the vision of producing educators who are skilled, knowledgeable, and exemplary role models. The university's long-standing reputation for excellence in teacher training, reinforced by 185 years of experience, ensures that students receive a comprehensive and well-rounded education. By focusing on nurturing aspirational, inspirational, and motivational teachers, Chichester fosters a teaching environment where students can grow into confident, reflective practitioners. Moreover, the university emphasises the importance of global citizenship and social justice, preparing trainees to understand diverse cultural perspectives and instil these values in their classrooms. This commitment, alongside strong partnerships with schools across the South East, equips aspiring teachers with the practical experience and holistic approach required to inspire future generations. As a result of our approach to teacher education, not only do student teachers engage with vital topics (such as developments in self-regulation and executive function or how to adapt teaching for pupils with SEND), they do so with a strong sense of moral purpose and underpinning values. Our success as a provider of teacher education has resulted in the University of Chichester’s strong reputation, earning a range of accolades such as an "Outstanding" rating in our most recent Ofsted and TEF Gold for teaching excellence. Most of all, our graduates feel prepared to enter the teaching profession and make a real difference to the children who they teach.

Modules

The course follows the BA (Hons) Primary Teaching modules and will cover key components of teacher education such as professional studies, curriculum studies and classroom experience. These modules provide student teachers with the essential knowledge required to be a primary school teacher. You will learn what to teach (the curriculum), how to teach (pedagogy) and why you are teaching (values and aims of education) through engagement with research, theory and practice. As a specialism in Early Years, students will also engage with modules that explore play-based learning, relational pedagogy, the importance of environment and more topics that build upon understanding from the broader programme. Throughout the programme, Early Years specialists will engage with placements in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Please see the University of Chichester website for further details of modules.
