Course summary
The Masters of Enterprise (MEnt) programme allows you to undertake a one year research degree. It contains little or no formal taught component. This type of study gives you the chance to explore a research topic over a shorter time than a more in-depth doctoral programme. It is ideal for individuals wishing to explore a potential business or social enterprise idea, either to start-up their own business or for a new venture within public- or private-sector organisations. The emphasis will be on enterprise creation and personal entrepreneurial development within the chosen area, rather than on the study of business organisations. This one year programme of research will culminate in the production of a large-scale piece of written work in the form of a research thesis that should not normally exceed 15,000 words. On graduation, you will have acquired entrepreneurial knowledge, behaviours, and skills with the ability to use research to develop and underpin your ideas. Depending on your research project, you will be in a position to take a new service or product to market; increase your likelihood of success in business, social enterprise, or self-employment; and have a better understanding of issues impacting on enterprise activity related to your area of research.
Modules
Example projects could be:
- Explore how to take a new product design to market
- Investigate how a public sector body might generate income from an expensive piece of equipment when it is not being used for its original purpose
- Develop a business plan for an existing business to expand into new areas of activity
- Analyse different models of setting up in business or social enterprise to see which best supports your idea
- Plan how to implement an innovative idea in a traditional institution
- Investigate the impact of an issue such as intellectual property protection on future income streams
- Explore commercial exploitation of the output of a university research project
