Course summary

Whether you're switching subjects, returning to education, or didn’t quite get the qualifications you hoped for, this pathway is designed to help you build the skills, confidence, and academic grounding to thrive in Computer Science.  You’ll be taught by the same expert staff who deliver our full degree programmes, developers, researchers and innovators who are as passionate about computer science as they are about helping you succeed. From one-to-one support and hands-on practical projects, you’ll gain the confidence to tackle real-world problems and feel prepared for the rest of your degree.  You’ll study in modern labs, collaborate with newfound friends, and start building a portfolio to impress from day one. Whether you’re interested in artificial intelligence (AI), game development, cybersecurity or data science, your foundation year at Swansea is the first step towards a future in tech. 

Modules

In Year 0, you will typically study areas including: Computational Probability, Introduction to Programming, Fundamentals of Robotics, Fundamental Mathematics, Computational Problem Solving, Fundamental Geometry. In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: Programming, Concepts of Computer Science, Modelling Computing Systems, Introduction to Data Science. In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: Declarative Programming, Software Engineering, Database Systems, Algorithms, Automata and Formal Language Theory. In Year 3, you will typically study areas including: Writing Mobile Apps, Web Application Development, Embedded Systems Design. You will also undertake a Computer Science Project Implementation and Dissertation and a Computer Science Project Specification and Development.

Grade B in GCSE Maths (or Grade 6).


English language requirements

For applicants whose first language is not English we require a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) and no less than 5.5 in each component.
