Course summary

The applied sport and exercise physiology course will provide you with the underpinning theoretical knowledge and the key practical skills required to work as an applied sport and exercise physiologist. Sports and exercise physiologists often work within multidisciplinary teams, helping monitor and develop performance for individual and team-sport athletes. Our course received 100% student satisfaction in the 2022 postgraduate taught student experience survey, and here are some of the reasons why: We have a dedicated human performance clinic allowing students opportunities for hands-on real-world work experience opportunities with external athletes and clubs. We have an established link with West Ham international football academy, giving MSc students the opportunity to conduct fitness testing on football players from around the world. We have an established link with the Parachute Regiment, giving MSc students the opportunity to conduct fitness testing on highly trained military personnel. We have an established link with the Fashion department at UEL, giving MSc students the opportunity to work with global brands such as Umbro on the co-design of sports clothing for performance improvement. We have a dedicated placement officer, offering students numerous opportunities for work-based learning experiences throughout the degree We have award-winning academic staff recognised for the quality of their teaching and passion for the subject area Staff teaching on this degree work in applied practice with athletes at the world championship and Olympic level

Modules

All years The MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology equips you with advanced knowledge of physiological responses to exercise and training. Core modules balance theoretical understanding with practical laboratory skills, including advanced physiological testing methods like VO2 max and lactate threshold assessments. You’ll develop professional experience through industry work placements with support from the university's dedicated placement team. The programme culminates in a large research project where you investigate your chosen area of interest with academic supervision, preparing you for careers in high-performance sport, health settings, and research. Sport and Exercise Work-Based Learning (Mental Wealth) (Core Modules) The work placement module will enable you to develop your employability and technical skills within the sports industry. Due to our industry links and array of partnerships, our dedicated placements team will be on hand to help support and find a placement relevant to your career ambitions. Applying Research Skills (Core Modules) This module provides you with the tools and techniques required to complete your final research project. You will be taught relevant research methodologies and statistical analyses that will help you understand what is required to complete a masters level dissertation. Sport Research Project (120 credits) (Core Modules) The final research project gives you the opportunity to pursue a particular topic that is of interest to you. You will be assigned an academic advisor that will help support you along the process, and you will complete a comprehensive investigation surrounding a topic within the Strength and Conditioning field. This will give you the opportunity to show the knowledge and expertise that have been gained throughout the course. The Theory of Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology (Core Modules) This module will provide you with a detailed understanding of the core scientific concepts and topics that underpin applied sport and exercise physiology. You will develop advanced theoretical knowledge of how physiological systems respond to exercise and training, including how to monitor and prescribe training thresholds, understand the impact of extreme environments, and interpret the role of exercise in disease prevention. As part of this module, you will develop the skills required to critically evaluate primary literature and make your own informed, evidence-based conclusions, whilst learning the fundamentals of writing academic manuscripts. The Advanced Practice of Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology (Core Modules) This module will provide you with the practical skills needed to work in a range of applied sport and exercise physiology settings. You will expand on the skills acquired at undergraduate level by developing your competencies by conducting a range of physiological tests to assess health and performance, including assessments of maximal oxygen uptake and lactate thresholds. You will learn how to collect high-quality data and deliver concise, timely feedback to clients to help them make informed decisions.

Assessment method

Assessment tasks are mainly spread across the year to make the workload manageable. Assessment methods include group works, exams and individual work including essays, presentations, case studies, professional development and practical activities depending on the nature of the course. All grades count towards your module mark. More details will be included in the student handbook and module guides. Feedback is provided within 15 working days in line with UEL's assessment and feedback policy. YEAR 1 Coursework 75% Practical 10% Portfolio 15%
