Course summary

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in Sport & Exercise Science and Coaching, which students can build on should they decide to continue their studies beyond the Certificate stage. The Level 5 Higher National Diploma allows students to specialise by committing to specific career paths and progression routes to degree level study. On successful completion of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma, students can develop their careers in the Sport & Exercise Science and Coaching sector through: • Entering employment such as: Sport Coach, Community Sports Leader, Performance Developer. • Continuing existing employment. • Linking with the appropriate Professional Body. • Linking with the appropriate certificates. • Committing to Continuing Professional Development (CPD). • Progressing to university.

Modules

• Nutrition: Understand the fuel that powers athletes. • Fundamentals of Sport & Exercise Psychology: Dive into the mindset of champions. • Anatomy & Physiology: Explore the human body’s capabilities. • Professional Skills (Pearson-set unit): Sharpen your expertise with industry-relevant skills. You’ll engage with a variety of specialist and optional units, including: • Coaching Practice & Skill Development: Master the art of coaching. • Training, Fitness Testing: Measure athletic performance. • Physical Activity, Lifestyle & Health: Promote wellness through sports. • Lifestyle Coaching: Guide others to achieve their fitness goals.

Assessment method

The core units will be assessed by the combination of multiple assessment methods such as: • Reports • Essays • Practical assessment • Case study • Research project • Presentations • Logbooks

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Admission tests

Interview

All applicants are required to attend an interview and will be notified of the date and time via email, a text reminder is also sent the day before the interview. Applicants applying from outside the West Midlands alternative interview arrangements can be made for you, but we strongly encourage all prospective applicants come along to view Solihull College and University Centre’s facilities and meet the teaching teams. As part of your interview and possibly your offer you will be required to provide your original certificates, including GCSE’s or equivalents.

Institutions Own Test (IOT)

Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have appropriate industry and life experiences will have their prior learning and skills taken into account and maybe required to complete an Aptitude assessment (this will be advised at interview).


English language requirements

Students who are non-native English speakers, or who have not studied the final two years of school in English, but can demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate to IELTS 5.5, with a minimum of 5.5 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4, 5 or 6 qualification, will be considered as eligible to apply for the programme/course.
