Course summary

The role of the midwife is vital. Supporting women through pregnancy, labour, birth and during the postnatal period is a truly fulfilling career. You’ll be making a difference to the lives of women and their families – starting right here with this degree in midwifery. You’ll spend half your time in theoretical study in our award-winning Allam Medical Building, with all the advantages of its state-of-the-art facilities. For the other half, you’ll be on clinical placement, learning through mentored practical experience the skills you’ll need to become a confident, effective and fully qualified midwife. The award-winning Allam Medical building houses a suite of impressive learning areas including simulated birthing units, neo-natal wards and more. • Get paid £5,000 a year: Apply for at least £5k a year, depending on your personal circumstances, through the NHS Learning Support Fund. This is a yearly payment that you won’t have to pay back. • Accredited qualifications: The course is Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) accredited, so when you graduate, you’ll be eligible to register as a qualified midwife. Where could this take me? Midwifery is a vocational degree with most of our graduates going on to work as midwives after graduation. Our midwifery degree has a 100% employability rate – so the job prospects couldn’t be better – with graduates starting careers in the NHS as well as in private practice. Some even take their qualifications abroad to work as midwives overseas.

Assessment method

You'll be assessed through a combination of written, practical and coursework assessments throughout your degree. Written assessment typically includes exams and multiple choice tests. Practical is an assessment of your skills and competencies. This could include presentations, school experience, work experience or laboratory work. Coursework typically includes essays, written assignments, dissertations, research projects or producing a portfolio of your work.
