Overview Get ready to pursue a career in the biological sciences with UWS’s BSc (Hons) Applied Bioscience programme. You’ll receive hands-on training in a wide range of biology disciplines to establish your knowledge before progressing to study more advanced and research-linked topics. Work-related learning combined with access to UWS’s state of the art laboratories will prepare you for a wide range of career options. Large amounts of practical work, experience with modern techniques and developing research skills are key strengths of the programme as is the option to undertake a work placement in Year 3. Programme highlights • This programme equips you with the skills to pursue a career within biological sciences including molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology and immunology. • You’ll receive hands-on training in biological disciplines before progressing to study more specialised and advanced bioscience topics. • Work-related learning, combined with access to UWS’s state-of-the-art laboratories, will prepare you for a wide range of career options. • This programme is fully accredited by the Royal Society of Biology and you will be eligible for free membership to the Society throughout all years of your studies. Programme details Work-related learning is available on this programme, including an optional 12-week placement or one-year sandwich placement. Students have undertaken placements with organisations such as: • Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow • Devro • Controlled Therapeutics (Scotland) Ltd Careers This programme will prepare you for a successful career in Applied Bioscience and develops graduate skills which equip students to enter a wide range of vocations, including: • Industry • Research • Teaching • Analytical laboratories • Sales MSc or PhD options are also available for graduates. This qualification is acceptable to all Schools of Education as an entry qualification to the Postgraduate Diploma in Education for Biology and General Science teaching.
Modules
Year 1 A general introduction to various biological disciplines, from cell and molecular aspects to ecological and environmental topics. You will be introduced to the role of a bioscientist and research specific careers and projects. Additionally, you will receive an introduction to the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. Year 2 Studies focus on more specialised areas of bioscience including cell biology, cell culture, pharmacology, biochemistry, microbiology and genetics. Year 3 Options to concentrate your studies on include more advanced modules in biochemistry, human physiology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology (protein structure and function, and DNA technology), pharmacology or related specialist disciplines including parasitology. Case study and work-related learning is possible and a valuable option is a 12-week (or shorter) work placement. The work placement takes into account your interests and is normally in a bioscience laboratory in a biotechnology, pharmaceutical or analytical company, or in a hospital laboratory. The placement enhances your employability and is preparation for your Year 4 project. Year 4 You will develop and refine your previous studies and a supervised project allows you to conduct research in a subject area of your choice.
Assessment method
You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials and workshops. You will also have the opportunity to take part in group work and independent learning to develop your transferable skills such as research, presentation, communication and working as part of a team. TUITION FEE INFORMATION - SCOTTISH STUDENTS:
Eligible Scottish domiciled students can usually apply to have their tuition fees paid for them each year of their studies by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). If you're not sure about your eligibility, you should contact SAAS. You need to apply to SAAS each year of study to have your tuition fees paid directly to UWS.
TUITION FEE INFORMATION - UK, IRISH & GIBRALTARIAN STUDENTS:
Eligible students who are domiciled in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland as well as from the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar or the Republic of Ireland will qualify for tuition fees of £9,250 per academic session of study to a maximum of three years if you are studying on a four year bachelor degree course (eg. BAcc (Hons) / BA (Hons) / BEng (Hons) / BSc (Hons)). So, if your degree is four years' duration, you will only be charged tuition fees for three years. Similarly, if you are studying a five year integrated master's degree course (eg. MEng (Hons)) the you will only be charged tuition fees for four years.
