Course summary

The Humanitarian Development and Social Justice pathway offers the opportunity for students to engage with an emerging theology of humanitarian practices – exploring the complex questions that emerge for Christians engaged in social transformation through acts of compassion and professional development agencies. It offers opportunity to explore with other practitioners the interface of theology, faith, cultures and development practices. The path supports the exploration of issues that emerge for those engaging in compassionate ministry and social justice through humanitarian and/or development practices. It offers the chance to engage in constructively critical reflection on, and engagement with, different approaches to ministry through social transformation.

Modules

Core modules: Compassionate ministry; Christian approaches to humanitarian or development practices. Elective units: Theological reflection; social and pastoral implications of Christian holiness; the church and the city; independent study (compassionate ministry or humanitarian development); contemporary missiology and culture: mapping the landscape; contemporary missiology and culture: emerging issues.

Assessment method

Assessment methods include essays, presentations, seminar participation and final dissertation.


Entry requirements

Good Honours degree in a relevant subject (exceptional entry considered). International applicants will need a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.
