Course summary

The Master of Public Health (MPH) at ARU London is designed to prepare students for careers focused on improving health and wellbeing at a population level. Centred around the key principles of health protection, health improvement, and service development, the course provides a thorough understanding of the social, economic, environmental, and political factors that influence health outcomes in diverse communities. The programme includes a final major project where you will apply your learning to a real or simulated public health issue, allowing you to demonstrate your knowledge, practical ability, and strategic thinking. By the end of the course, you will be equipped to pursue a range of roles within local authorities, NHS and international organisations, NGOs, and public policy teams, or to continue your studies in a specialised or management-focused direction.

Modules

Postgraduate Study Skills, Research Methods, and Ethics (Healthcare) This module supports your transition to postgraduate study by developing essential academic and research skills. You will learn how to design research projects, analyse healthcare data, and understand ethical principles in public health research. Determinants of Population Health Explore the social, economic, environmental, and political factors that influence population health. This module focuses on understanding health inequalities and how public health professionals can address them. Health Protection Learn how to assess and manage risks to public health, including communicable diseases, environmental hazards, and emergency planning. The module also covers surveillance systems and health risk communication. Finance and Governance in Health and Social Care Examine how financial management, regulation, and governance structures impact health and social care delivery. You will gain insights into policy frameworks, accountability, and funding in public health systems. Population Healthcare and Health Improvement Focus on the planning, delivery, and evaluation of health improvement programmes across communities. You will learn to apply evidence-based approaches to influence health behaviours and improve outcomes. Postgraduate Major Project (Healthcare) Apply your knowledge to a substantial, independent project focused on a real-world public health issue. This capstone module allows you to design and complete research, evaluate findings, and demonstrate your critical and analytical abilities.

Assessment method

Teaching and assessment You will learn through a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, group work, simulations, and case study analysis. Learning is interactive and practice-focused, giving you opportunities to apply public health principles to real-life scenarios. Assessments are designed to reflect professional tasks and include: Written coursework and oral presentations Online quizzes and in-class tests Practical projects and reflective work A final dissertation (Major Project) Assessment is inclusive and supported by feedback and clear marking criteria.


Entry requirements

UK Qualifications Students must have equivalent of a UK first degree at 2:2 or above plus relevant experience. AND Have previously been taught in English and have sufficient command of English to undertake postgraduate study or have an IELTS (or equivalent) score of 6.5 or better. If you have completed a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent non-UK qualification and did not achieve our required grades for entry, but can demonstrate that your life/work skills would make you suitable, you should still consider applying. International Students Entry Requirements For entry into a postgraduate taught course, you'll need one of the following: typically, a UK honours degree with lower second-class honours (2:2). Some courses may have different requirements: these will be stated on individual course pages relevant qualifications obtained in your home country, as per Anglia Ruskin's country-specific entry requirements
