Course summary

This qualification is perfect for you if you want to develop your personal effectiveness and business acumen. You’ll learn how to design and manage your own strategy, enhance people management skills, and learn how best to apply specialist evidence-based HRM knowledge in thoughtful ways with the aim of improving working lives for all. Our Masters in Human Resource Management course builds on core human resource management theory and practice to examine the range of people management challenges which organisations face. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), therefore you can obtain professional membership of the CIPD. To study with us you don't need to have previous work or study experience in the field of Human Resource Management. As part of the course we deliver teaching in the key concepts and practices of HRM, alongside developing the practical skills you need to become a successful HRM professional. In your final semester you'll also have the opportunity to do a consultancy case study, acting as a human resources (HR) consultant to fictional companies, while solving realistic HR problems and working with HR practitioners. We teach you the need for thoughtful and ethical management practice, and this course is no exception. Ethics and considerate practice should be the focus of organisations and is the foundation for our course. We have a number of internationally recognised academics teaching on this course and available to help you during your studies. We offer a collaborative learning process and encourage you to talk about your work experiences, about what you believe good people management to involve, and where work practices need to be legislated. Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) accreditation CIPD accreditation ensures you’ll study materials which are current and industry led. Student membership of CIPD enables you to attend networking events including the annual student conference. The accreditation offers additional opportunities to network with industry professionals at CIPD events. Modules

Semester 1: Strategic and operational HRM in context; managing organisations with an international outlook; responsible business in a global economy. Semester 2: Managing and developing a diverse workforce; comparative employment systems; plus 2 options from a list including: leadership and decision-making; current challenges in HRM; managing in NGOs and the third sector; managing change and people; developing international managers; students also take a research methods module over Semester 2 which is an essential foundation to help prepare and conduct a major research project for the dissertation (over the summer period).

Assessment method

Assessment is by a mixture of examination and coursework, including written assignments and presentations. Successful completion of the taught element of the programme leads to the award of the Diploma or allows the student to continue for the award of the MSc by completing a 15,000-word dissertation based on an original research question agreed by the student and supervisor. The project should reflect the student's own understanding and knowledge of selected topics learnt during taught courses.


Entry requirements

A minimum of a 2nd Class Honours degree (2.1 preferred) or equivalent. Applicants without these formal qualifications but with significant appropriate/relevant work/life experience are encouraged to apply. I
