Course summary

MSc Human Resource Management (International Development) offers a practical and critical exploration of how human resource strategies can drive sustainable development and organisational effectiveness; particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Designed for those working or aspiring to work in HR roles in the Global South, this course provides a deep understanding of the philosophy, values, and practices that underpin effective people management in diverse and often challenging development contexts. You’ll examine how global trends in HRM intersect with local realities, such as labour market dynamics, cultural norms, policy environments, and organisational change. Whether you're an established HR professional, such as a personnel manager, HR officer, or planner - or a line manager tasked with people leadership responsibilities, this MSc will equip you with the tools to make a meaningful difference. You’ll gain both strategic insight and operational know-how to improve recruitment, retention, performance management, and employee engagement in ways that are equitable, inclusive, and responsive to development goals. Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to question and critique dominant models of HRM, and to consider innovative, locally informed approaches that empower people and strengthen institutions. Join a global network of development-minded HR professionals and graduates ready to lead change, shape workplace culture, and build stronger, more resilient organisations in your community and beyond.
