Course summary
The MSW in Social Work is a two-year, full-time postgraduate degree course. The qualification is recognised throughout the UK and it’s expected that in due course it will meet the criteria for recognition in the EU and elsewhere overseas. The Masters in Social Work course is based on the Standards in Social Work Education (SiSWE) and is to be validated by social work's professional body in Scotland, the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC). The degree provides a stimulating blend of university-based teaching and agency-based learning opportunities across both years.
Modules
Year 1: Social Policy, Law and Social Work Organisations, Theory, Practice and Professional Development, Research Methods 1, Professional Practice 1. Year 2: Risk and Protection in Organisational Contexts, Theory and Practice 2, Research Methods 2, Professional Practice 2, Dissertation. Placements of 90 days from January to May are provided across the statutory and voluntary sectors in a range of Social Work service settings, which may include (but not exclusive to) childcare, community care, criminal justice service, mental health services, residential care, homelessness services, addiction services, etc.
Assessment method
Our assessment methods consist of regular feedback on specific tasks related to teaching and learning as you work through a module. Modules are formally assessed in a range of different ways, including essay, report, presentations and peer group assessments.
How to apply
International applicants
Where English is a second language, an IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 overall is required.
Entry requirements
Upper second-class Honours degree, preferably in a social science discipline but graduates in other disciplines with an understanding of social sciences are welcome. Maths National 5 (or equivalent ) or above. Applicants must be able to demonstrate sufficient numerical, statistical and budgetary competence. An English qualification at the minimum of SCQF level 5 or equivalent is also required (or evidence of an Honours Degree). In exceptional cases where an applicant does not have a degree, the applicant may be considered if they have extensive professional experience showing career development and can demonstrate academic ability at postgraduate level, equivalent to SCQF Level 10 or above. Six months directly relevant experience in social work, social care, community work or a closely-related activity at the point of application or twelve months equivalent part-time experience. This is compulsory.
