Marketing has the power to shape everything in business, from consumer choice to product development, brand, and sustainable consumption. On this BA (Hons) Marketing course, you’ll develop a marketer's toolkit and work collaboratively to explore sustainable and ethical marketing practices that create brands with purpose. You’ll learn marketing fundamentals while having the flexibility to choose modules that interest you most. You might lean more towards expanding your knowledge in international marketing and cross-cultural management, or specialise in developing marketing plans for sustainable brands. You may choose to focus on deepening your understanding of digital and immersive technologies, new trends in influencer marketing and emerging platforms. Whichever direction you choose, you'll be gaining skills that you can apply to any industry. The course supports you to develop highly sought-after digital marketing skills and gives you opportunities to explore the use, in marketing, of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual reality (VR). By the time you leave us, you’ll not only understand the theory behind effective marketing – you’ll also have a range of practical, professional skills that you can use in your marketing career. More about the Professional Placement Year A Professional Placement Year (PPY), traditionally known as a sandwich year, is where you undertake a period of work with an external organisation for between 9-13 months. The placement occurs between your second and final years of undergraduate study. You can engage in multiple placements to make up the total time and are required to source the placement(s) yourself, with support from the Careers team.

Modules

Year one Gain key knowledge of the business environment, organisational structures and business cultures. You’ll begin to build your marketing toolkit from the start of your degree, learning about the process of marketing, building campaigns and using digital technology. You’ll also hone the data management skills that will support later learning on data analytics and use online simulations to explore various business scenarios. Year two In the second year you'll start to develop your digital marketing skills and learn more about all aspects of promotional media. On successful completion of the Digital Marketing Essentials module in semester one, you’ll immediately obtain DMI certification that shows you've learned the fundamental skills of digital marketing and is recognised by the world’s leading employers including Google, Facebook and Twitter. You also get the chance to customise your own study journey by choosing modules that support your specific career goals. For example, you could take a deeper dive into social media marketing by studying digital storytelling, influencers and contemporary celebrities in marketing. You can also choose modules that’ll give you the tools to support your career goals, whether these are to become an entrepreneur, work in a start-up or crowdfund to enable you to be your own boss. Year three is your Professional Placement Year. Final year You’ll focus on sustainable and societal marketing – a major trend in business today – and learn to create a future-ready brand strategy. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about emerging digital and immersive marketing technologies and the role of AI in marketing initiatives, and you’ll get to join The Studio, our innovation hub for creative media technology. Your final dissertation and module choices are flexible, allowing you to explore topics and make business connections related to the sector of marketing that you'd like to explore. You might decide to lean more towards developing your mastery of digital marketing and content development, hone your expertise in the application of emerging marketing technologies (VR/AR/AI), or focus more on becoming an international marketing expert and how to manage cross-cultural teams. It’s up to you!

Assessment method

You'll be assessed in ways that test your marketing abilities, business knowledge and management skills in practical and applicable ways. These could include presentations, group work, computer-based simulations, podcasts, exams, essays, videos, business reports and opportunities to work on projects set by real companies. On your return to University for your final year, you'll submit your Placement Portfolio, detailing your development on your placement.
