Course summary

Thought of becoming a nurse and already hold a degree? This graduate entry accelerated course provides you with the skills and expertise to work as a partner in the care of people across the spectrum of society in the rewarding field of mental health nursing. The course is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), with whom you will be eligible to register after successful completion. Our programme also enables applicants who are already graduate nurses to gain registration in a second field of practice in around 20 months through recognition of their prior learning. Our two year postgraduate Mental Health Nursing course has two routes these are the MSc and the PGDip each have differing entry requirements. After you've successfully completed the PG Dip course you can also ‘top up’ to a full MSc by completing a dissertation module. Nursing at Southampton is ranked 11th in the world and 2nd in the UK in the QS World Rankings by Subject 2023. This course is undergoing revalidation. This is an internal quality assurance process that may result in some changes to course content in the future.

Year 2: Co-ordinating Long Term Care in Partnership (MH Field GEN), Influencing Innovation and Change (Level 7) Managing Acute Changes in Health Status (MH field GEN) Part 2 Practice Placement 2 for PG Dip, Part 3 Placement 1 for PG Dip, Part 3 Placement 2 for PG Dip. Assessment method

Assessments on this PGDip in mental health nursing take the form of essays, exams, projects and professional conversations. Practical skills will be assessed whist you are on placement and recorded by your practice mentor.

Qualification requirements

2.2 Honours degree or higher, you must have undertaken relevant formal academic study within the past 5 years. Relevant work experience or voluntary work is preferred. GCSEs: Minimum of GCSE Maths and English Language (A*-C or 4-9). GCSE Science (A*-C or 4-9) also required if not offered as a level 3 qualification. Certain GCSE equivalent qualifications may be considered.
