Course summary

Gain an in-depth understanding of creative pedagogies and how they empower young learners. This future-facing course will address contemporary social justice issues and promote active citizenship through the arts. As part of this course, you’ll: • Explore cutting-edge practice in the creative arts, including drama, oral storytelling, theatre in education and creative writing • Develop innovative ways to promote purposeful and holistic learning in educational and community settings • Challenge young learners to create powerful and transformative story worlds across art forms, creating a sense of community, wellbeing and empowerment • Create culturally relevant teaching and learning opportunities to become a creative educator who places young people at the centre of their own learning • Work with an experienced team of published educators and arts-based organisations across Yorkshire • Develop the confidence and skills to work with and inspire young people • Work with national and international Montessori and contemporary arts practitioners Teaching expertise The course teaching team includes practice-based researchers. You’ll be taught by a range of artists, philosophical thinkers, teachers and researchers engaged in addressing issues such as climate change through the arts. Dr Lisa Stephenson and Dr Tom Dobson, experts in drama and creative writing pedagogies respectively, will share their live projects with you. Projects could include: • Published stories and programmes by the Story Makers Press (such as the Creative Therapies partnership) • Work with schools on the trans-European project • Empowering Voice Teacher Development Fund Industry connections You’ll be invited to join Lisa’s Story Makers Company. The organisation was founded to give young people the power to make stories through drama and creative writing. It will provide you with access to a network of international artist educators. You’ll also build placement prospects and have the opportunity to share our innovative curriculum work with schools and cultural partners. Applied learning Placement opportunities will enable you to put your skills into practice. You might already be working in a school where you’ll have the option to apply your learning and new creative processes. Alternatively, we can place you with one of our partners in mainstream or community settings, such as The Royal Armouries or the Interplay Theatre Leeds.


Entry requirements

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional. DBS, Self declaration required


English language requirements

Please note the IELTS requirement for this course are IELTS 6.5 with no skill below 6.5.
