Course summary

Studying the rich history and flourishing present of literature can open out into explorations of history, politics, science, and visual media. This provides the critical skills necessary to interpret cultures from the past and shape those of tomorrow. At Southampton you can study everything from medieval travellers’ tales to modern fictions of globalisation. We are ranked 10th in the UK for English in the Complete University Guide, 2023. A wide choice of modules allow you to explore literary genres and specific periods of literary history, such as fiction, experimental performance poetry, contemporary women's fiction, creative writing and literature and the environment. To complement your studies you can take part in our Writers in Conversation workshops, or even join one of our 40 student-led performing arts groups. We have partnerships with Chawton House, owned by Jane Austen’s family and now home to a unique collection of women’s writing, and the John Hansard Gallery, which will give you unrivalled access to archives and artworks. You'll have the opportunity to study abroad, spending a semester, a summer or even a full year at one of our global partner universities. Our Digital Humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre.

You will study a variety of topics that cover the fundamental aspects of English and you will have the opportunity to tailor your course to your interests by choosing some of your modules. Assessment method

On this course you will learn through a range of activities that may include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects, and independent learning (studying on your own). You will be able to demonstrate what you have learnt through a variety of assessment methods, such as blogs, creative projects, dissertations, essays, individual and group projects, module journals, portfolios, self-assessment, teamwork, written exams. You’ll be supported by a personal academic tutor who will offer support and advice throughout your studies. You will also receive feedback throughout your course, enabling you to identify areas for improvement before your work is formally assessed.

Qualification requirements

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard. The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
