Course summary

Are you interested in medicine, science and health related topics? Do current medical issues such as COVID-19 and genetic engineering spark your interest? Do you want to learn more within this field? Then our Medical Bioscience programmes could be just right for you. The FdSc and BSc Medical Bioscience programmes have a significant number of industry relevant practical lessons and skills are developed in scientific and clinical settings. These support learners to develop practical skills that are required by a variety of roles within the sector. Theoretical content supports practical lessons and covers a wide range of topics within Medical Bioscience, this provides students with underpinning knowledge in key areas and helps inform career and/or further study choices. The FdSc Medical Bioscience programme include a variety of modules that reflect different areas of the Medical Bioscience sector. This will allow students to develop an awareness of potential career opportunities as well as the underpinning knowledge. The programme has an emphasis on practicals with the majority of core modules having a theory and practical element as this supports the development of industry relevant practical skills as well as underpins theoretical content to develop knowledge development in the subject. Practical lessons will be delivered at UCNL in the purpose-built Higher Education (HE) STEM laboratories which consists of specific Microbiology, Chemistry and Dissection laboratories alongside several general laboratories.   • Academic and Professional Skills I (20 credits)
  • Applied and Clinical Biochemistry (20 credits)
  • Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology (20 credits)
  • Principles and Applications of Microbiology (20 credits)
  • Introduction to the Fundamentals of Genetics (20 credits)
FdSc Medical Bioscience (level 5)
  • Academic and Professional Skills II (20 credits)
  • i-Research (20 credits)
  • Immunology in Human Health and Disease (20 credits)
  • Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics (20 credits)
  • Neurobiology and Pharmacology (20 credits)
  • Translational Oncology (20 credits)
Occasional changes to modules and course content may take place. Students will be notified when applicable.

Assessment method

The primary way of delivering this course is on campus. On campus teaching includes a combination of lectures, practical lessons, small group seminars, workshops, guest lectures and one to one discussions with your tutor. Students will receive approximately 14 hours of teaching per week throughout this course. Additional one-to-one meetings with tutors will provide further support.
