Course summary

Are you ready to take the next step in your career in occupational health, safety and environmental management? This part-time distance learning program offers opportunities through two distinct pathways: MSc and MRes. As an MSc student, you’ll complete taught modules during the first year and the initial semester of the second year, ending with a six-month research dissertation. On the other hand, as an MRes student, your emphasis will be on research methodology modules, paving the way for a 12-month, 120-credit research project centred around workplace-related topics in your field. With our core modules, you’ll flex your skills in research methods, literature review, and research project design. MSc students will explore fundamental subjects such as advanced health, safety and environmental risk management and CSR in health, safety and environmental management. You’ll also have the flexibility to select additional modules in areas such as disaster management, safety assessment, flood risk, and mental health at work. Previous students have come from diverse organisations, including BAE Systems, the oil and gas industry, emergency services, NHS, and renewable energy sectors.

Modules

All modules are subject to availability and this list may change at any time. Both the MSc and MRes start with core modules relating to techniques for undertaking research: Research Methods (NEBOSH Programmes) Literature Review Designing Research Projects MSc students then study two core modules of their programme and one optional taught module: Advanced Health, Safety and Environmental Risk Management Corporate Social Responsibility in Health, Safety and Environmental Management Optional modules are themed around: Disaster and Emergency Management Safety Case Production and Assessment Mental Health at Work

Assessment method

For MSc students, the taught modules are taken in the first year and the first semester of the second year using the University’s e-learning environment. Once these have been completed, the last six months of the course consist of the research dissertation. The online nature of the programme means access to a stable broadband internet connection is required for access to course materials, to communicate with University staff and undertake course assessments.
