Course summary

The objective of the OTHM Level 4 Diploma in Accounting and Business qualification is to provide learners with an understanding of accounting and business in the broader business context, and to provide them with the practical, industry-focused skills to manage business finances, budgets and cash flow effectively, and to play a key role in business growth. Learners will build the knowledge and skills required for a career in a wide range of businesses, where accounting and business literacy are key skills for managers at all levels. The Level 4 units combine theoretical and practical knowledge in academic and research skills. Units are: • Academic Writing and Research Skills • Business and the Economic Environment • Principals of Financial Accounting • Quantitative Methods in a Business Context • Management Accounting • Leading and Managing Teams Successful completion of this qualification will equip learners with the specialist skills and technical terminology to develop their accounting and business and management skills and to progress to further study or employment.

Year 1 • Academic Writing and Research Skills • Business and the Economic Environment • Principles of Financial Accounting • Quantitative Methods in a Business Context • Management Accounting • Leading and Managing Teams By the end of this course, you will be able to: • Understand how to construct a reliable and valid academic argument. • Understand how macro-economic factors and micro-economic factors impact a business. • Be able to prepare financial reporting statements for different types of organisations. • Be able to construct and use graphs, charts and diagrams for informed decision making. • Know how to apply break-even analysis in different contexts • Be able to determine own capacity to be an effective leader and manager. On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Diploma in Accounting and Business [OTHM]

Assessment method

You will be assessed by assignments, work-related projects, demonstration of professional competence in work-based situations, and practical activities that apply the knowledge you have gained. There are no written exams. When not attending timetabled sessions, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will typically involve reading articles and books, working on individual projects, undertaking preparation of coursework assignments and presentations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, the library and canvas, the online virtual learning platform.

Qualification requirements

Students who have recently been in education are likely to need one of the following: ● A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Business or accounts such as AAT ● A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as Math's and English ● Other related Level 3 qualifications ● An Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution. ● Relevant work experience ● An international equivalent to the above qualifications. Our Recognition of Prior Learning policy means that students’ previous learning and experience can be taken into account, and they may be awarded certain qualifications or units of a qualification based on that learning or experience.

Candidates will be interviewed by the Course Leader to discuss whether they have the relevant skills and experience to successfully complete the course.


English language requirements

Students applying for this course will need a certain level of English language skills. This course is taught and assessed completely in English. Before accepting students onto the programme, we will ensure that those who are non-native English speakers and who have not had their final two years of schooling in English, can demonstrate ability equivalent to the standard of : ● Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2 ● PTE Academic 51, or ● IELTS 5.5 (reading and writing must be at 5.5)
