Course summary
The Master of Arts in Theological Studies is a unique MA programme that aims to foster a holistic approach to doing theology which rejuvenates the study and practice of Christian theology for Church and World. The Master of Arts in Theological Studies is a unique MA programme that aims to foster a holistic approach to doing theology which rejuvenates the study and practice of Christian theology for Church and World. We accomplish this aim by means of the integration of the commonly recognised sources of theological knowledge: the Bible (Scripture), the historical construction of Christian belief (Tradition), considered, critical thought (Reason), the role of experience (Experience) and the witness of the living community of faith (the Church) as it proclaims the Gospel and makes disciples. In addition, this core concept of doing theology is brought, in various ways, into the theological sub-disciplines (Biblical studies, Systematic Theology, Theological Ethics, and Theology of Worship) represented by the optional modules. We view these sub-disciplines as areas or emphases of theology that are mutually interpretive. This programme is for you if:
- You are a theology or religious studies graduate seeking an innovated and flexible Masters-level qualification in theology;
- You are contemplating PhD level work in theological studies or a related discipline and you are seeking a foundation for doctoral research;
- You are involved in ministry and are looking for a path of lifelong learning that will enhance your service;
- You have never formally studied theology but wish to integrate your professional and personal interests with theological understanding.
Modules
Core 1: Sources and Methods in Theology (MI7601) (40 credits) The module aims to introduce students to the sources and methods in theology so that students can begin to develop their own construction of a theological method that can be used in various ways throughout the programme. Furthermore, students will enter into dialogue with other theological methods and traditions in order to develop critical knowledge, skills and understanding that can inform their own developing method. Core 2: Dissertation Research and Design (MT7400) (20 credits) This module aims to develop critical skills involved in the planning and writing of a dissertation in theological studies. More specifically, the module aims to develop skills of academic writing and research, including selecting appropriate literature, using appropriate style conventions and developing an argument. Finally, the module aims to develop skills for producing a dissertation proposal. Core 3: Dissertation (MI7401) (60 credits) This module provides students the opportunity for intensive and detailed research-based study of their chosen topic within the context of theology or a related discipline and under the guidance of an appropriate supervisor. This module is the sequel to the Dissertation Research Skills and Design module in which research methods and design are examined and a dissertation proposal is developed. The dissertation is a 15,000 word piece of work that serves as the capstone of the MA programme. Optional Modules: Trinitarian Personhood, Christology Ancient and Modern, Contemporary Ecclesiology, The Holy Spirit in Luke-Acts and Paul, The Gospel of Mark, Social Justice: Biblical Themes, Social Justice: Current Issues, Christian Worship, Issues in Contemporary Christian Worship.
How to apply
International applicants
We welcome applications from people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities on our programmes. LST is proud to have a thriving international body of students living and studying at LST. All non-UK and international students will need to apply for a visa to study at LST. You can apply for a Student visa to study in the UK if you're 16 or over and you meet the following requirements: - You have been offered a place on a course by a licensed student sponsor. LST is a licensed sponsor for all undergraduate programmes. - You have enough money to support yourself and pay for your course. - You can speak, read, write and understand English. As of 1 January 2021, EU students are required to apply for a student visa under the new PBS. Assessment of one's eligibility for a visa will precede an offer of a place. Applicants for whom English is not a first language must ensure that their level of English is sufficient to undertake study at LST. If English is not your first language, you may be requested to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), although this will be discussed prior to an interview. For some international students, studying at our campus is not an option, and so we also offer this course as both blended and online. Do not worry if you are unfamiliar with higher education in England! LST provides support for writing essays in the form of study skills, which all new students are required to attend. Additionally, LST lecturers operate an open-door policy, which together with peer-to-peer support available, ensures that your study experience is a positive one.
