Course summary
On the Applied Mathematics / Pure Mathematics degree at Aberystwyth University, you will study mathematical concepts and the identification and analysis of shapes and patterns combined with data collation and calculation. You will learn how to solve problems and develop theories within mathematics. You will also discover how to use mathematical theory to solve problems in areas of science, engineering, and physics. The first two years of the Applied Mathematics / Pure Mathematics course will give you a broad introduction to important areas of mathematics, including algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics and mathematical analysis. You will be able to specialise in your final year and take advantage of our expertise by choosing from a wide range of optional modules based on your own interests. In studying Applied Mathematics / Pure Mathematics you will develop clear analytical thought processes, problem-solving abilities and the capacity for logical argument. Such skills are highly transferable and attractive to employers in a range of sectors. Graduates of Applied Mathematics / Pure Mathematics make significant contributions to vital areas such as science, engineering, technology and finance, and find employment in roles where numerical and data analysis is key. This degree is accredited by the IMA (Institute for Mathematics and its Applications), the UK's learned and professional society for mathematics, directly contributing to your recognition as a Chartered Mathematician. This course will develop your understanding of a range of theories and processes in Mathematics. You will develop your written and oral communication skills and your ability to work independently and in a group. Some of the skills you will develop include: research, data analysis, enhanced mathematical and computational skills, problem-solving, creative thinking, information technology, independent working, time management, organisation, meeting deadlines and self-motivation. You will enhance your ability to express ideas, communicate information clearly and concisely, accommodate other viewpoints and come to a decision as part of a team. Work experience will greatly improve your CV and make you more attractive to employers. This degree will be particularly valuable in employment situations, which require specialist numerical skills and logical and analytical thought. These include career paths and sectors such as statistical analysis and computational statistics, teaching, aeronautical engineering, accountancy and banking, risk analysis and actuarial work, financial management and investment analysis and information technology.
