Medicine with a Gateway Year at University of East Anglia UEA - UCAS

Course summary

Overview You'll join a small cohort of enthusiastic and motivated students working together to gain the academic knowledge and skills needed to progress onto our five-year medical degree. The Gateway Year team will work hard to support you and ensure that you feel like a medical student from day one. You'll develop your professional identity, and the skills needed to succeed as a medical student, through dedicated modules delivered within the Medical School. The Gateway Year offers opportunities for clinical shadowing and clinical experiences with local health care providers including the NHS. You'll be well supported through regular sessions with your academic advisor. The Medicine with a Gateway Year programme maps to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We encourage students to be curious and invest in the world around them and to be agents for positive change within the medical school and the medical profession. Upon successful completion of the Gateway Year, you'll progress to the five-year MBBS Medicine degree. This programme is structured into modules based on body systems. Norwich Medical School is committed to producing well-rounded medical graduates, and you'll study the foundational biological, social, and clinical sciences of medicine. You'll then apply this knowledge in practise through placements in hospitals and general practices. You'll continue to work in small groups during the MB BS course, using problem-based learning (PBL) techniques to apply your learning to virtual scenarios. Alongside this, you receive teaching in primary care, where you'll meet patients, bringing these scenarios to life. Opportunities for practical, hands-on learning will be available in both simulated and real healthcare environments. You'll further refine your skills through dissections, clinical training, and communication skills teaching. Your learning will be supported by a weekly schedule of lectures and seminars, supplemented by attachments in secondary care hospitals, some of which may require residential stays. For details on the subsequent years of the programme, please refer to the full MBBS Medicine course profile. Disclaimer Course details are subject to change. You should always confirm the details on the provider’s website: www.uea.ac.uk

Modules

Alongside biology, chemistry and mathematics modules, students will develop their learning skills, and are introduced to the key features of the MB BS programme including small group study, problem based learning, student selected study activities and a professional portfolio including clinical work experience. Upon successful completion of the foundation year, you will progress onto the five-year MB BS Medicine degree programme. The subjects studied on the Foundation Year help to prepare you for the specialist modules on the MB BS programme, such as Digestion and Nutrition, The Senses and Emergency Care.
