Course summary
(Subject to approval) The foundation degree in Sports, Coaching and Fitness will help you to develop the specialist skills and knowledge necessary to excel within the dynamic sport coaching and fitness sector. This will enable you to grow and adapt to the public, sport and fitness demand within the industry. The course considers a broad range of relevant disciplines, preparing you for future employment in the sector. You will build a strong understanding of the physiological theory of sport and fitness, as well as health psychology, nutrition and various other topics. You will also develop your analytical and research techniques, which will support your practical skills and experience. You will explore sports coaching and leadership theories and apply this to practice. The course will also give the opportunity to reflect on your new skills and knowledge, bridging theory to practice. There is a focus on providing vocational skills in realistic working environments through professional practice opportunities, and the College has a range of specialist facilities that support both your academic and practical development. These include 3G football facilities, a modern fitness suite, a physiology lab and a sports massage and rehabilitation suite. You will be learning the correct processes and procedures involved in running a number of health and fitness assessments, including methods such as Wingate, Astrand, Cooper and Bruce testing. You will also have the opportunity to complete an industry-recognised fitness qualifications during your studies, such as YMCA Gym Instructor, Exercise to Music, Children’s Instructor, Group Indoor Cycling or Circuit Instructor (a small fee may be required). If you are looking for a chance to combine a passion football with studying for a degree, UCSD is pleased to offer the Torquay United Football Development programme. You will have the opportunity to complete a number of industry-recognised qualifications during your studies, such as CYQ Gym Instructor and Sports Massage qualifications, and the GP Referral Consultants Certificate, all of which are included in the course fee.
